about

Back in the 1990s I had the privilege of spending a bit of time with the fine Nashville songwriter, Lisa Aschmann, when she taught at the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop (PSGW) in Washington State. She composed in her head, not playing any instruments. I have used this songwriting technique of hers too: "use familiar chord progressions ... use your magpie mind ... Don't worry about being original -- you will be." I picked this beauty of a song but I could have picked many other songs of hers.

Let me also thank all the great instructors at PSGW, especially my swing guitar teachers, Rebecca Kilgore, Chris Grammp and Sylvia Herald, and the others there who taught and influenced me so much ...

P.S. Thank you, Marty Jones, for playing God on this track. Is God from Yorkshire?

lyrics

AIN'T WE GREAT?
© 1998 Lisa Aschmann - Nashville Geographic (ASCAP)

You’ve got the prettiest nose
And it goes with your face
It goes with your clothes
When God made a nose, he said
“One of those would fit you just perfectly”
So God made a nose and ten perfect toes
And someone to tickle them – me

Aint we great? Aren’t we smart?
Wasn’t it a genius, made us?
Aren’t we a work of art?
How did I get so lucky?
Isn’t this first rate?
I love you; you love me
Ain’t we great?

And you’ve got the prettiest chin
‘bout the prettiest chin there’s ever been
When God made a chin
at the base of your face
His eyebrows wiggled all over the place
He said “I know there’s someone, gonna like what I made
There’s a grin, to go with that chin”

Aint we great? Aren’t we smart?
Wasn’t it a genius, made us?
Aren’t we a work of art?
How did I get so lucky?
Isn’t this first rate?
I love you; you love me
Ain’t we great?

I’m gonna give you a hug, my snuggly bug
I’m gonna give you a kiss, like this
I’m gonna be right here ‘til you fall asleep
Now don’t you peek, just go to sleep

Aint we great? Aren’t we smart?
Wasn’t it a genius, made us?
Aren’t we a work of art?
How did I get so lucky?
Isn’t this first rate?
I love you; you love me
Ain’t we great?

about

Paul Washington Mill Bay, British Columbia

Paul Washington's songs have swinging rhythms, smart lyrics, delivered in a unique vocal style. He mixes vintage country and rock'n'roll with the great sounds of western swing.
“It was déjà vu when I realized I first heard swing music at my mother's knee. She used to sing in the big band days and that put that music in my DNA. This CD was a tribute to her -- that’s why I put her on the cover.”
